Ready for the scenario season

It's been a little while sense the last post. Since January there've been a couple of games in Oklahoma that proved to be action-packed. Stalingrad, Blackhawk Down, and D-Day were a ton of fun. Although it's August and the heat index is out of control, we're ready to see what the fall has to offer. Next up: BT Big Game at Dodge City Paintball in NW Oklahoma City. We hope to see you all there.

Paintball (The Movie)

I recently watched Paintball (The Movie), an independent film that was released in July 2009 from Spain about a group of paintball players that sign up for the ultimate paintball game at what’s advertised as the best scenario paintball field in the world. Each team has eight players who are blindfolded and transported to their starting point on the field. Once they arrive, they’re given their equipment, objectives, and position on the team. They must reach the 6 flag stations that have equipment boxes to help them complete their mission. Confusion sets in when the team finds that the first box contains a bulletproof vest and is soon being fired at with real bullets. They quickly realize that this is no longer a game – they are being hunted with real guns and their new mission is to make it out alive.

The movie has a great idea, but it was poorly executed on film and quickly takes a nosedive to the point that it’s hard to watch. There is no way that I would fly halfway across the world to play in a paintball game with people I didn’t know, where I couldn’t use my own equipment, and where I had to be blindfolded to get to the field. Half the team didn’t wear full-face protection and took their mask off in the middle of the action. Within the first 10 minutes of the game the team is ambushed and they all cower into a bus. Then once they figure out they’re being hunted with real bullets they continue to carry their paintball guns. And when they should be quiet and stealthy – they’re loud and walking out in the open. The characters become so annoying that you start rooting for the bad guy to kill them off so the movie can end faster.

If the movie had done a little more research on how scenario paintball games work, gotten more input from paintball players, and developed the characters a little more, the movie would’ve been a lot better. Paintball Commercials

Bud Light recently aired another commercial on their "not too light / not too heavy" campaign featuring paintball. The "too light" part has this guy hitting his target, but the paintball is so slow that it bounces off. The "too heavy" part shows him calling in an airstrike and his target is completely covered with paint.

I looked back at some of the other paintball commercials I've seen and noticed that the majority of them involve paintball being played in the woods.

The marketing gurus at companies with big budgets (like Budweiser) know that their audience can identify more with playing paintball in the woods than they can with playing in a paintball tournament. After all, most people start out playing in the woods and naturally progress to scenario paintball games or tournaments.

The good news is that commercials like these remind players about where they started playing - in the woods.

Time For Winter Paintballs

As it gets colder and colder, it's time to switch over to a paintball with a winter shell. The shell of a normal paintball gets more brittle as the temperature drops, which can cause the ball to break either in your loader (especially if you've got a cyclone feed) or in your barrel (especially if you use a gun that operates at high pressure like a BT Delta or a Tippmann X7).

Most manufacturers don't change the fill in the winter because it doesn't usually help the paintball perform any better in extreme conditions.

A winter shell is a little thicker and can withstand the cold temperatures. According to Mark from Kee Action Sports, most paintball manufacturers start using a "winter blend" in their shell formula in October through February. This helps to ensure that when you buy your normal paint from the paintball shop you get a little bit thicker shell.

If you want the best performing cold-weather paintball, ask for Polar Ice or Ramp Blizzard.

RAP4's Dimpled Paintballs

RAP4 recently introduced its G.O.L.F. (Guided Optimum Longer Flight) paintballs boasting a minimum 3-year shelf life, increased weather resistance, improved accuracy, and longer flight. The difference in this paintball as compared to others is a wax shell with golfball-like dimples and a powder fill.

The dimples improve aerodynamics of golfballs, paintballs, and even cars as seen in Mythbuster's Clean vs. Dirty Car episode.

The RAP4 G.O.L.F. paintballs with powder fill are $24.95 per 500 or $84.95 per case. They will soon release their paint filled version, but have not released how much they'll be.

I'll definitely pick up 500 of the paint filled ones and post a review on them when they're available. I'm sure they'll be a hot item as long as the shell is brittle enough to break on those longer-range targets.

UWL 2010 Event Schedule

The UWL (Ultimate Woodsball League) recently announced its 2010 schedule. Their league involves 10-man teams going head-to-head in the woods for three 10-minute periods.

Each team has a home base and there are two capture and hold objectives on the field. Your team must have one captain (semi-auto w/ 9-volt hopper), one heavy gunner (any gun w/ any hopper), one scout (semi-auto w/ 9-volt hopper), one sniper (pump or pistol), and 5-6 infantry (non-electronic gun or semi-auto w/ 9-volt hopper depending on the division). Entry fees are $65/person and you can bring your own paint.

Operation Turkey Recap

75 players turned out to Operation Turkey at The Paintball Field in Newcastle, OK. The game was capture the flag over 12 flag stations scattered throughout the entire playing area. At the end of the day, the field drew names for two guns. A Piranha was given away by the field and a BT Delta was given away by Ryan Gray of Kee Action Sports. Operation Turkey proved to be another successful event that raised money and non-perishable food for Food and Shelter for Friends in Norman. I'm definitely looking forward to playing in this event next year.

Gearing Up For Operation Turkey

I'm getting ready for Operation Turkey on Nov. 14th, an annual charity event hosted by The Paintball Field in Newcastle, Oklahoma. It's a a 7-hour never-ending game format with 12 flag stations, special missions, turkey hunt, target shoot, top gun, and 3vs3 speedball. The entry fee (10lbs of non-perishable food or $10) goes to Food and Shelter For Friends in Norman.

Last year there were only about 40 players since it happened to be the first cold day of the season. Hopefully the 70-degree-weather will continue for next weekend.

This will also be the first time for me to play in my Multicam uniform as a member of the Drifters, a team from Chickasha, Oklahoma.

Game details are as follows:

AIR: $10 for all day CO2 or HPA fills
PAINT: Field Paint Only ($55-$60 per case)
RENTAL EQUIPMENT: Limited amount available so please pay in advance
PRIZES: Drawing for paintball guns, paintballs, t-shirts, masks, gloves, tanks, and much more

Sands of Iwo Jima Recap

L337 Krew hosted The Sands of Iwo Jima at Adventure Zone on October 24th-25th. There were 125 players who attended, including team members from The Devil's Brigade, Wolfguard, BOHICA, and The Rat Patrol. A tank was on hand that switched sides whenever you eliminated it. Another cool part of the game was that you could use the anti-tank weapons to take out bunkers. I eliminated several players using the AT weapon. I'm looking forward to the next game the L337 Krew is hosting out at AZ. It's usually called Stalingrad and is hosted in February or March. Stay tuned and we'll post more details when we get them.

Our History

Paint Army originated in April 2005 as a scenario paintball event production company. We hosted The Battle of Khe Sanh, an 8-hour scenario game that brought 100 players together from Oklahoma, Kansas, Arkansas, and Texas.

The game was followed by an awards ceremony and prize drawing. Everyone received a door prize and 1 in 3 players won a bigger prize at the end of the game. On top of that, every player from the winning team received a Vietnam-era dog tag with the inscription “Paintarmy.com Battle of Khe Sanh 2005 Winner.”

It was great day to be out playing paintball and we couldn't have done without the staff, Hester Designs (marketing, corporate identity, and website), Splatter Paintball Supply (paint & prize discounts), Combat Recon (Tippmann A-5), Opsgear (Pods), and Wild West (playing field).

Now our focus is on bringing paintball players together by keeping them informed of what's going on. We concentrate on recreational paintball games, such as the ones played in the woods at public paintball fields, big scenario games, and backyard games played at private fields.
